Victor had a bad, bad colic yesterday. This incurred a $700 vet bill. I'm selling my dressage saddle to pay for the treatment. It has a bit of an O. Henry flavor, don't you think?
Conventional wisdom used to be, "keep 'em walking" during a colic. It was thought that the walking actually helped relieve the colic. We don't so much think that any more, and most vets will tell you that as long as the horse will lie down quietly, to go ahead and let them. BUT if they try to thrash about, especially rolling from one side to the other, that puts them at risk for twisting their gut, which is most often fatal. Victor was pretty much trying to lie down and flail around like mad whenever he stopped moving, so we walked him whenever he tried to go down.
